The History of Peter Wood & Son
Mark has accumulated a vast experience of organ building through working in the Wood Wordsworth factory from a young age and gaining knowledge from the builders from Abbott & Smith Organ Builders who were incorporated into Wood Wordsworth in 1975. He acquired a wealth of knowledge from both his father and grand-father. Mark went onto to work in Ireland for a year as a trainee with Wells-Kennedy Partnership of Lisbon where he trained in mechanical action design and building including voicing.
Continued Growth
Following the dissolution of Wood Wordsworth Ltd in 1981 Peter Wood founded Peter Wood & Son. He developed international connections which we still have to this day. He continued organ building and running the business until 2008 when he retired due to ill health. Mark took over the business and in August 2021 we became a ‘limited’ company and now trade under the name Peter Wood & Son Organ Builders Limited. Virginia Nichols-Wood joined the company at that time and despite having been involved in the business for years she became one of the directors. She plays an active role within the business and is the author of all the reports and estimates, and takes an active role in building, tuning and restoration.
Harrogate Based Company
We are located in Harrogate and have well equipped spacious workshops to carried all the necessary work that organ building requires. We manufacture our own wooden pipe feet and handles as replacements. We have the facilities to conduct pipe respraying. We actively encourage our customers to visit while we are working on their organs. Mark has recently been appointed to the Institute of British Organ Building Board of Trustees. We are committed to the preservation of historic organs and have previously been involved in the relocation of instruments for this purpose. We have been able to secure the future of some of these instruments in the UK and abroad. We are registered and accredited for historic restoration, tuning & maintenance, cleaning, overhauling and rebuilding through the Institute of British Organ Building. In 2021 we acquired renewal of our accreditation for the historic restoration of the Reiter organ (1883) at All Saints Church, Roos which is an organ that had not sounded for over 30 years. The preservation of this organ was paramount as there are very few Reiter organs remaining in the United Kingdom. Reiter was a Hull organ builder during the 1880s.
